Step-by-Step Washing Instructions
Step 1: Turn the Hoodie Inside Out
This is the single most important step. By turning the hoodie inside out, you protect the printed design from direct contact with the drum and other clothes. Zippers, buttons, and rough seams from other garments can scratch the ink. Do this before every wash.
Pro tip: Close the hoodie's drawstrings and zip it up (if it has a zipper) before turning it inside out. Loose drawstrings can tangle or snag on the machine agitator.
Step 2: Use Cold Water and Mild Detergent
Always select cold water (around 60-70°F). Hot water accelerates color loss and can shrink the cotton content. Use a detergent labeled "gentle" or "for dark colors" - these are free of bleach and brighteners that strip ink.
Pro tip: Avoid fabric softener. It coats the fibers and can make the print feel sticky or reduce breathability. If you want softness, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle.
Step 3: Choose the Delicate Cycle
Set your machine to the delicate or hand-wash cycle. This reduces agitation speed and cycle length. A normal cycle can last 30-45 minutes and cause unnecessary friction. The delicate cycle typically runs 15-20 minutes - enough to clean without wearing down the print.
Common mistake: Using the "heavy duty" cycle for a hoodie that isn't heavily soiled. You're just adding wear. Reserve heavy cycles for towels or jeans.
Step 4: Skip the Spin or Use Low Spin
High-speed spinning (1000+ RPM) can crease the hoodie and stress the seams. Use a low spin setting (400-600 RPM). If your machine has a no-spin option, use it - the hoodie will be wetter but less wrinkled. Wringing by hand is not recommended; it distorts the fabric shape.
Pro tip: If you hand-wash, gently squeeze water out. Never twist or wring the fabric.
Step 5: Dry on Low Heat or Air Dry
Heat is the biggest threat to your hoodie's print. Always dry on low heat or use the air-dry/no-heat setting. If you can, line-dry the hoodie inside out in a shaded area. Direct sun can fade both the fabric and the print over time.
Common mistake: Throwing a damp hoodie in the dryer on high because you're in a rush. This causes up to 5% shrinkage per cycle and can crack the ink within 3-4 cycles.
